With the huge risk of floods in Terai, the Water and Weather Science department is set to pre-inform the general people about the possibility of a flood in their mobile phones. This information was released much to the relief of people of flood affected areas, by the head of the department Dr. Krishiram Sharma. The department has stated that it has been associated and will be coordinating with the mobile service providers NTC and Ncell for this purpose. Because the agreement has already been done, the service is already in use since the past June 29 in Nepal.
The information will be granted to the people in an area with high risk of flood, through the use of SMS. This provision has been made public after much lives and properties have been lost to the floods in the past few years. Previously, the provision of alarm system in high-risk rivers was present in Nepal. Moreover, the toll-free number 1155 was made available to the general public for information about the flood. This SMS service is being implemented for the first time. The SMS will also be sent to the District Office as well as the District PoliceHeadquarters as well.
SMS after rainfall of 60 millimeter
If the flood affected areas will be affected by 60 millimeters rainfall in an hour, the information about the impending flood will be notified to the user of this service. The message will be sent to the mobile phones of the general audience 3 to 6 hours prior to the possibility of a flood. The message will consist of all the details about the probable impending flood.

What will the SMS include?
The message will be sent in a Roman language which will be understood by the general Nepali people according to the Department’s Hydrologist Engineer BinodParajuli. The general people of the flood affected areas will get a message about the impending flood and they will be told to move to a higher area to be free from the effects of the flood. If the water content decreases, they will be told to return back to their respective areas. This service will be provided to people who use the NTC and Ncell services.
Which areas are at high risk of the flood?
The areas from the Kankai River to the east to the Mahakali to the West are at high risk of flood. ChandaniDodhara and BhimdattNagarpalika, Doti’sNau Village, Accham’s 5 villages and Surkhet;s six villages are in high risk of flood. Also, Bardiya’sRajapur and six other villages, Kailali’sTikapur, Banke’s nine villages, lower parts of Butwal, Tanahu’s 11 villages, Palpa’s 6 villages, Nawalparasi’s five villages, Chitwan’sBharatpur, Madi area and seven other villages, Sarlahi’s 15 villages, Rautahat’s 18 villages, Sunsari’s 6 villages, Saptari’s 20 villages, Udaypur’s 2 villages and Jhapa’s eight villages are at high risk of flood according to the Water and Weather Department of Nepal.
