You have a friend come over to your house and asking for the WiFi password. You have all your devices connected to the WiFi but you forget the password of the WiFi. 1. In Windows

Follow the following steps to find your WiFi password when you forget it.

1.1. Open the Network Connections window

Windows saves the passwords of the networks that you connect to. Open the Network Connections Window by right-clicking on the network icon in the System Tray. Select “Open Network and Sharing Center”. Click on “Change the adapter settings” link situated in the menu to the left.
Alternatively, you can also simply press the Windows Key+ R and type ncpa.cpl. Press enter to open the Window.

1.2. Right click on the wireless adapter

After opening the window, it is now time to right click on the wireless adapter, which might be labeled as “WiFi” or might have a manufacturer’s name. Select “Status” from this menu.

1.3. Open the Properties window

Click on Wireless Properties and then move on to click on the Security tab.

1.4. Revealing the characters

Click on the “Show Characters” box and the wireless password will be displayed. You can note it down for safekeeping and future use. If there is no option to show the characters, move on to the next step.

1.5. Download the Wireless Key View

This is a freeware from NirSoft that helps you scan the Windows directory and extract the saved wireless keys. It, however, does not work for Mac OS X. Download WirlessKeyView from the website of NirSoft. It comes in a Zip file and needs to be extracted.

1.6. Run the Wireless Key View software

Open the WirelessKeyView program and run the application. The window will now open.

1.7. Locate the password

The left column will display all the network names that you are connected to. Locate the network that you want to retrieve the key off. Look up the “Key (Ascii)” column.

  • In Windows XP, the WPA-PSK key is not displayed in ASCII format.
  • In this case, use the key situated in the HEX column.
  • This will work like the ASCII Key but will be longer.

2. In Mac

Below mentioned are the steps to find your WiFi password when you forgot it.

2.1. Open utilities

This folder is located in the Applications folder. You do not need an internet connection for this.

2.2. Click on “Keychain Access” program

This program stores all the system and online passwords, as well as the login information.

2.3. Find the network

Sort out the Keychain list by the “Name” category. Double click on the network that you want to retrieve the password of.

2.4. Displaying the password

Check the box indicating “Show Password:. Enter the administrator password and the wireless password will be revealed.

3. To access the router

3.1. Connect the computer to the router via an Ethernet Cable

To access the router, you need to be connected to the network. If you do not know the password, simply connect an Ethernet cable to the computer and the router.

  • If it is not possible to connect to the router using an Ethernet cable, you can simply reset the router and connect to it using the factory reset WiFi Password.

3.2. Open the router configuration page

The router configuration page can be accessed through a web browser. Type the router’s IP address into the browser’s address bar. Find the router’s IP address by searching the router manufacturers on the internet.

3.3. Log in

Enter the correct address and you will need to put in the username and password. The default username and password are usually “admin”. If you cannot seem to remember the username and password, reset the router.
• If you have not changed the username and password, then the default details might be jotted down on the documentation on the router itself.

3.4. Navigate to the “Wireless” section

After being logged into the router, move on to find the “Wireless” of “WiFi” section. By clicking a tab at the top pf the page or finding it from the navigation menu.

3.5. Finding the password

You will now see the wireless network name or the SSIS name as well as the type of security or encryption. You will see the “Passphrase” or “password” field near the SSID, this is the password you require.

4. How to reset the router

4.1. Find the router reset button on the router

If you happen to forget the login information for the router, you can simply reset it to factory default settings. This will erase the wireless network settings and you can simply reconfigure the network.

  • Everyone connected to the network will be disconnected.
  • The reset button is situated typically on the back of the router near the input ports. A paperclip might be needed to push the button.

4.2. After you find the router reset button, push and hold it

The router reset button should be pushed and held for at least 30 seconds. The router will completely reset now and the lights of the routers should flash to indicate so.

4.3. Reconfiguring the network

After resetting the router, it is time to reconfigure the network. Log in using the default login information for the manufacturer. Look up the model online to find it. Routers typically have the documentation details printed on a sticker affixed to the top of the router.

  • In the router configuration page, go to the Wireless section and set up the wireless network. Choose WPA2 as an encryption method unless you have an alternate valid reason not to do so.
  • Create a password that contains the mixture of letters, symbols, and numbers. The password should not be based upon any personal information and should not be guessable.
  • Change the login information too. This can be done by navigating to the Advanced menu in the Administration section.
